I am an actuary and analytics engineer. Currently, I am the AVP of Analytics Engineering at Symetra. I became an actuary after (1) my soon-to-be wife mentioned she might like to stay at home when we had kids, and (2) I looked up the the median salary of postsecondary teachers. Looking for alternatives, my naive self found an article that said "Actuary" was a top career with a the median salary much greater than a community college math teacher. And all you had to do was pass a few tests! Lol. If you know, you know. And then, after passing all of those tests, I promptly started doing...analytics engineering! I'm a big fan of SQL, dbt, Python, and using DuckDB instead of dataframes.
Personal
I live on an island in the Puget Sound with my wife (who does an excellent job making our home, homeschooling our children, and growing flowers) and 5 kiddos, so you can deduce what takes up much of my time. I do make time to go running, bake bread, do some small scale farming experiments, and play around with microcontrollers.
